Federal High Court dismisses lawsuit seeking to remove Yahya Bello as governor of Kogi State

Federal High Court dismisses lawsuit seeking to remove Yahya?Bello as governor of Kogi State
Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed a suit seeking to remove Kogi Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, from office.

Justice John Tsoho dismissed the suit on grounds that the plaintiffs, Michael Elokun, Ibrahim Sule and Hawa Audi had no business instituting the case. The plaintiffs were asking the court to grant an order for the return and immediate swearing-in of Idris Wada, former governor of the state.

Tsoho, in his judgment, upheld the objection of Bello that the plaintiffs had no “locus standi” to institute the action. He held that the plaintiffs were neither members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) nor aspirants in the primary election that made Bello the candidate of the party in the governorship election.

Moreso, the court agreed with Bello that the plaintiffs were not the only electorate in Kogi. The judge also held that the subject matter of the suit was not within the jurisdiction of the court as it was not a pre-election matter.

He said that the suit was bound to fail because it was filed almost two years after Bello had been sworn in as the democratically-elected governor of Kogi. Other defendants in the suit are the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney-General of the Federation.

5 women killed after Cherubim and Seraphim church building collapsed in Ondo

Five people have been killed and many others sustained serious injuries after a Church building collapsed at Ija-Ugbo, Arogbo Ijaw town, in the Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday.

It was gathered that all the victims at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church were women. Among them was a pregnant woman.
The building was said to be under renovation when it collapsed.
According to a witness, the women had gone to the construction site to fetch disused planks when the incident happened.

He said the tragedy threw the community into mourning.
The witness said:
“This is the first time that such a thing will happen in this community. It was caused by the inferior materials used for the renovation of the church. This is so sad as the women were not even members of the church, they just went there to fetch firewood”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr.  Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, describing it as sad and unfortunate.

The PPRO identified the victims as Morenike Bubuma, Margret Goloba, Mayama Goloba, Kowei Aboa and Dali Gunuboh, who was pregnant.

Joseph explained that the victims were killed while struggling for wood at the Church site.
He said:
“A renovation was going on in one of the churches in the area. The owners were trying to build a bigger church. While trying to demolish the old one, the building collapsed just as people were struggling for disused wood.

“Five people were killed on the spot, while four others were seriously injured and rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.”
He said the command had begun investigation into the incident, while the corpses of the victims had been deposited in a morgue.

The Caretaker Chairman of the Ese Odo council area, Mr. Bekewe Olowu, also confirmed the incident, saying it was “shocking and devastating.”

Alex Cobb, Orioles Reportedly Agree to Contract After 7 Seasons with Rays A

After spending the first seven years of his career with the Tampa Bay Rays, right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb has reportedly reached an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jon Heyman of FanRang Sports.

The deal is for four years and "close" to $60 million, per Heyman. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal had earlier reported it was expected to be "at least" a three-year deal worth around $50 million.
Cobb has had a roller-coaster career to this point. The 30-year-old was one of Tampa Bay's most valuable pitchers when healthy, boasting a 3.50 career ERA and back-to-back seasons with an ERA under 3.00 in 2013 and 2014.

The unfortunate issue for Cobb is staying healthy. He has never made 30 starts in a season, though he came close in 2017 with 29 and set a career high with 179.1 innings pitched.
Cobb lost the entire 2015 season because he had to undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in May. His rehab continued into 2016 before being healthy enough to make five starts in September.
Last season, Cobb was back to being an effective starter and played his way into a contract with the Orioles,

For Baltimore, even though there is risk with Cobb, his upside is high. And because his salary is low compared to what the top-tier free agents—Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta—received, they'd get a reliable starter who can stabilize the middle of their rotation as they build for 2018 and beyond.
Signing Cobb is particularly important for the Orioles if they want to contend for the playoffs in what is a loaded American League East. The fact Manny Machado is a free agent in 2019 gives Baltimore some impetus to look for some short-term upgrades.

Although the Orioles already signed Andrew Cashner, that move alone didn't move the needle too much with regard to the team's rotation. Cobb, on the other hand, is a real difference-maker for Baltimore's pitching staff.

Wednesday Mar 21, 2018.

No less than 12 African teams will be involved in midweek international friendlies today and tomorrow, including South Africa, Burkina Faso and Algeria.

Wednesday’s only game featuring African teams sees Madagascar take on Togo in Paris, with the Sparrow Hawks using the game as a warm-up for their high-profile clash with Ivory Coast – who will have Yaya Toure back in the fold – in Beauvais on Saturday.

Thursday features two clashes in a Southern African Four Nations Tournament which will both be held in Ndola, Zambia: the hosts take on Zimbabwe in the early afternoon, before South Africa and Angola renew hostilities.

Mauritius and Gabon will both be in action in the Far East, as they take on Macau and Thailand respectively, while Guinea-Bissau will take on Burkina Faso in Paris, with both teams turning their attention to building up for the resumption of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later in the year.

Finally, North African heavyweights Algeria will hope to continue their rebirth under new coach Rabah Madjer – who has controversially declined to give any pre-match interviews or press conferences – when they host Tanzania in Algiers.

Argentina Launch 2018 World Cup Away Kit

Super Eagles 2018 World Cup Group D opponent Argentina have unveiled their away kit for the tournament.

According to mundoalbiceleste.com, the kit which is all-black, was released on Tuesday and modelled by Barcelona star and national team captain, Lionel Messi.

This will be the first time Argentina will go for an all black away kit as against dark blue.
The kit has Adidas stripe on the right and left shoulder, the Adidas logo on the top right side and the Argentine Football Association logo on the top left side with two stars, which represents the number of times they have won the World Cup.

Argentina are in Group D at this year’s World Cup with Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland.

They will kick-off their group campaign against Iceland on June 16.

5 Right-Backs in the Running to Be Named in England's 2018 World Cup Squad

The World Cup is fast approaching and Gareth Southgate has a number of important decisions to make in the upcoming months before he is set to name his provisional squad for Russia in May.

The former Middlesbrough man has a number of options at right-back, but will probably bring only two along with him on the plane.

Here are five right-backs who could reserve their seats.

5. Nathaniel Clyne - Liverpool

In years gone by it was a battle between Clyne and Walker as to who would start for England. Unfortunately for Clyne, his chances of playing for England at this summer's World Cup have been decimated by injury.

The 26-year-old Liverpool defender sustained a serious back-injury in a pre-season game in July which has prevented him from making a single appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side since.

Consequently, there is virtually no chance that Southgate will include him in the Three Lions' World Cup squad.

Chances of playing: 5/10

4. Ashley Young - Manchester United

A remarkable rejuvenation has seen Ashley Young recalled to the England Squad for the upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and then Italy.

The 32-year-old winger turned full-back has ousted his more youthful compatriot Luke Shaw from United's starting eleven with a number of fine performances this season. Defensively, he is one of the few defenders who have been capable of quelling the attacking threat of Liverpool  and Premier League star Mohamed Salah.

Offensively, the former Aston Villa winger has scored two goals and provided three assists in the 22 league appearances he's made so far this campaign.

Young could well be on the plane to Russia in the summer but it won't be in the place of another right-back.

Chances of playing: 5.5/10

3. Joe Gomez - Liverpool

Captain of the England under-21 squad who reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in the summer, Gomez was promoted to the senior squad when he made his impressive debut against World Cup holders Germany in a goalless draw in November.

The 20-year-old got off to an impressive start to the season with Liverpool but his progress was then disrupted by a number of injury setbacks.

Nevertheless, the versatile Gomez has recently returned to Liverpool's starting lineup and helped the Reds secure two successive clean sheets against Porto and Watford

Over the course of the campaign so far, the former Charlton player has made 19 league starts for Jurgen Klopp's side, in which he has provided his team-mates with two assists.

His return to first team action has been a timely reminder to Gareth Southgate, who has since called up Gomez for the upcoming friendlies.

Chances of playing: 7/10

2. Kieran Trippier - Tottenham Hotspur

Trippier has enjoyed a mixed season with Spurs thus far. The 27-year-old started the campaign as the starting right-back following Kyle Walker's move to Manchester City, but Mauricio Pochettino has since rotated between the England international and Serge Aurier.

Nevertheless, Tripper, who has made three appearances for the Three Lions since his debut against France in a 3-2 defeat in June, has still racked up an impressive amount of four assists in just the 16 league starts he's made so far.

Unfortunately for Tripper, one of his former teammates is likely to start ahead of him in June.

Chances of playing: 8/10

1. Kyle Walker - Manchester City

Nailed on to start in England's World Cup opener to Tunisia is Manchester City right-back Kyle Walker.

The former Spurs man has been an ever-present figure for Pep Guardiola's table-toppers this season, having started 28 of their 30 league games thus - in which he has provided six assists.

Hailed as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world by his prestigious boss, Walker's pace coupled with his stamina offers a constant attacking threat down the right side.

He might not be England's most reliable defender but if Southgate is to persist with the five-man defence he successfully tested in earlier friendlies against Brazil and Germany, then Walker has to start.

Chances of starting: 9.5/10

If you missed it, we’ve got the highlights for you!
..
Cee-C’s Bad Behavior

Whether it was the excitement from the evening’s events, the alcohol provided by Biggie or just plain envy, last night Cee-C was on an absolute rampage with Nina as her main target. She must have regretted being the resident chef last night because it could of been the most dramatic dinner in the House yet.

Chaos is a Ladder

Last night turned into a furnace within minutes after completing the Lumapil Task. It was all smiles and jeers and laughs one minute and the next it was utter craziness. Cee-C had been provoking Nina all day but things finally came to a head in the kitchen when Cee-C blew up, she insulted Nina and Nina retaliated, at one point there were even threats of physical harm and the whole House had to spring to action to calm the two ladies down and prevent any serious damage. It seems that Cee-C wanted something like this to occur all day and used the excuse of Nina giving Miracle the biggest piece of meat as a catalyst for her angry exposé’.

Stomping out Fires

As Cee-C stormed off outside, this caused different Housemates to spring to the aid of both ladies. Initially Alex jumped into the argument but quickly backed off and tried to calm the situation down. Later Teddy A listened to Cee-C’s side of the story outside while smoking a cigarette. Rico Swavey was very much on the side of Nina as he thought Cee-C was being rather wild but also realized his place soon and backed off. However, the most interesting gist of the night was when Miracle went to Cee-C alone to sort out the beef, he told Cee-C straight that he does not trust her and they slowly started to hash through their issues with a few laughs. Miracle however looked as though he was doing it more to protect Nina than to get close to Cee-C who barely let him get a word in. Lolu also immediately ran to Cee-C’s aid, even after Nominating her in the Diary Room earlier that night. In a very Machiavellian fashion, he then ran over to Nina to get her side of the story.

Awkward

After the massive fight, the food was ready and all the Housemates gathered in the kitchen to grab some food. Nina and Cee-C did not resolve their issue and this led to everyone scattering around the House to eat without the awkward tension that riddled the air.

The Bubbles and The Dance

Seeing as it’s Championship week, Biggie introduced a challenge that brought out the Housemates inner ‘kids’ and had them feeling ridiculous for not quiet nailing  something that a bunch of three year olds would easily do in their sleep.

Bubble This, Bubble That

For the ‘Bubble through the Hoop’ Challenge, the Housemates were to make bubbles using the bubble blower, and then keep them afloat until they reach the hula-hoop through which the bubble had to be blown. The catch was that at least 6 Housemates had to successfully ‘hoop’ the bubble. The Housemates were given 12 minutes to complete the Challenge and all but Lolu and Rico Swavey managed hoop.  The two were clearly embarrassed but Biggie gave them another go at the ‘kindergarten’ exam and they managed to pull it off, or should we say ‘blow it in’?!

Foes For The Dance

As fate would have it, Tobi and Cee-C were the first two Housemates that managed to hoop their bubbles, therefore automatically earning themselves ‘representative’ status. Upon learning this, there two couldn’t hide their dissatisfaction, which ultimately over shadowed their joy. Shortly after their first challenge was concluded, the Housemates received a brief. For the second Challenge, the representatives were to ball room dance for as long as Biggie saw fit, wearing classic clothes and unable to do anything either than the dance.

Intense and Emotional

At first, the Housemates had a great laugh as the awkwardness was visible even to a blind man. Forced by the collective objective of winning the Challenge, Cee-C and Tobi swallowed their pride and danced away. Approximately 30 minutes through the dance, the distance and awkwardness seemed to have been flushed away and two seemed too close for comfort. At one point, they gazed into each other’s eyes and had us thinking they’d lock lips. As they were lost in the dance, the music stopped and even though Biggie commended the amount of emotion invested in the game, they lost the Challenge due to not having had they shoes on. Nonetheless, the long hug and giggle told us that ‘Cebi’ might have resurrected; we might be wrong though.

Diary Session Deluxe

With only nine Housemates left, tonight’s Diary Session was a lot more contentious than usual. True colours are starting to show and masks are starting to fall.

The Meltdown

There were many moments during the Diary Sessions tonight that raised a few eyebrows but the emotional magnum opus goes to Nina for her complete meltdown. She is obviously frustrated and feeling the pressures of the game but her issue with Cee-C also drew her closer to the edge. Biggie did his best to console her but it was when he asked her to do a bit of self-reflection that the flood gates opened and she just let it all go. She feels immensely misunderstood by the other Housemates and doesn’t know how they view her. Biggie told her she is here because she chose to be and that she needs to focus on the positive if she wants to move forward with the game.

The Antagonist

Cee-C had her fair share to say to Biggie too, it is clear that her and Nina, despite their differences, actually feel the same way – confused and misunderstood. There was even a glimmer of remorse for Cee-C because she did say she feels bad about things that have been happening in the House lately. She asked Biggie how she could do better in the House and he told her that she needs to start communicating properly with her fellow Housemates and use curiosity as her method for redemption.

Alex’s Honesty

Alex has really grown and developed a lot during her time in the House but she has always spoken her truth without fear in the Diary Room, she is real and raw and unapologetic. Tonight was no different, she fully expressed herself. He feeling is that so many people in the House are completely fake and that she can see who people really are right now. She expressed that people do one thing and say another and she also expressed her frustration with Nina, Cee-C and Rico. She said that she feels Rico keeps on trying with her and getting into her personal space and she is is not into it.

Cool as a Cucumber

While the ladies of the House were full of angst, it was the polar opposite for the guys who were very chilled calm and positive. BamBam appeared to be the only lady in the House that felt different, telling Biggie she felt happy and at peace.
As the final days draw near, the game keeps intensifying but the main question still stands, how will everyone react when two of the Evicted Housemates return on Sunday?

Oh Whot Fun!

The Diary Sessions were a whirlwind of emotion but the Housemates cut the tension in the best way possible by playing cards and sharing some laughs.

Unity

In face of massive division, the Housemates obviously chose to take the high road after their Diary Session and come together in the old fashioned way, around a table with some cards. Biggie obviously got through a few of them because other than the odd flared temper, it was all laughs and farts (weirdly) from most of the Housemates.

Black Sheep

Someone who was noticeably missing from the fun was Nina, after her emotional breakdown in the Diary Room, she took some time to cool off in the hammock. While the others all laughed and fooled around she resided herself to the kitchen where she began cooking, even though she said that she will not cook again after the horrifying events of last night.

Strange Love

Rico seems to have taking a strong liking towards Alex and seems to be doing everything in his power to be close to her since Leo’s departure. Alex however is not interested in the slightest and is trying to think of ways in which she can tell him to back off. Tonight during the card games was no different and Rico could be seen following Alex around like a puppy. Rico seems to always fall into this space of unrequited affection but he should really learn to read a person’s vibe.

2face Idibia regrets having all his kids from different women

Nigeria music iconic, Innocent Ujah Idibia, aka Tuface, in this interview with PUNCH newspaper talks about his music, life and inspiration.
Tuface expresses his displeasure at having children from multiple women.

“It is really tough to talk about it.  Honestly, when I look back and  examine that  aspect of my life, I wish it never happened. I wish all my kids came from one woman.  I love my children and there is nothing I can do to change the situation . I have moved on and I am married to one of the women who bore me kids. I no longer dwell on that issue.”
His relationship with his children.

“I am not the strict type because I have a soft spot for kids. As such,  my children always get away with so many things when I am around. Their mothers are the ones who  discipline them. I pamper my kids,’’ he tells with delight in his voice.

Does it seem likely that any of his children would follow in his footsteps? He affirms this and adds that some of them are already exhibiting  signs of taking up music as a career and rather than dissuade them, he is prepared to give them the encouragement they need to succeed.
When he is not making melodious music, the international act always takes a break from his hectic schedule to relax. For him, this comes in different forms he quips.

“Sometimes, I could just sleep but most times, I like to hang out with my friends. We laugh, gist, crack jokes and generally have fun,’’ he says.
Commenting on the motivators in his life, Tuface says that one of the things he strongly believes in is the fact that the sky is big enough for everyone to fly as there is adequate space. He continues:

“It is just like the millions of stars that you see in the sky at night. Notwithstanding their number, there would still be space for more stars to shine. That is life and nature at work, so there is space for all of us.  I always say that nobody should think that he or she is luckier than everyone else in life because that is a farce. As an individual, do not think that there is no space for the next person to thrive. For me, that is how I see life.’’

Even though he dropped out of school many years ago, he reiterates that in spite of his itinerary as an international musician, he looks forward to a time when he would be able to go back to earn a university degree. In a pitch that shows sincerity,  he says,
“Maybe I’d give it a thought once again. I am going to keep trying and I would never give up on education.’’

His role models he says must not necessarily be musicians. He argues,
“They are people from different professions and surprisingly  music is not one of them . I look up to many people and I do so for countless reasons.”

Still speaking, he says Senator Ben Murray-Bruce, Richard Mofe-Damijo and comedian, Ali Baba stand out for him and the reason is not farfetched. In a revealing tone, he enumerates some of the reasons why he regards them so.

“These are people who have remained on top of their game in their respective fields of endeavour and they are doing very well so I have tremendous respect for them. For instance, take a look at Ali Baba, he is a very humble man, yet he is on top of his game as a comedian and I always strive to do same,’’ he states.

Tuface is not exactly a trendsetter yet he manages to keep it simple and sharp even though he is not proficient at fashion as he is at music.  In describing his style, he keeps it brief.
“Nothing in particular determines what I wear . I just like to dress in clean clothes and also look sharp when I go out,” he explains.

He sums up his philosophy about life in just one short sentence, ‘Live and let live’ and adds that he just wants to be remembered as that guy that came to the world to do his thing and also allowed others do their own thing, all in the spirit of one love.
Having weathered several storms in his career, Tuface has a word of advice for up-and-coming artistes.

“I just want them to know that going into music is serious business. More so, they should challenge themselves creatively and be able to explore all avenues. They must not be held back by any challenges that may come their way. When they combine all of these together, the road would be easy.

On my part, I am just going to keep doing good music and keep bonding with my family. For me, I am just doing my own thing so I am not in competition with anyone. I am on my own lane and wouldn’t have it any other way,’’ he concludes.

I sleep with five men per day –Sex worker

The police in Lagos have arrested the owner of Collabor Hotel, an inn on Ige Street in the Iyana Ipaja area of the state, for allegedly hosting underage sex workers in the facility.
The owner of the hotel, John Okon, was apprehended along with the hotel manager, Emmanuel Thomas. Their alleged accomplice, Monica Ita, was said to be at large.
celebrity news learnt that operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, acting on intelligence, busted the hotel on Saturday, March 10, 2018, and caught a 15-year-old primary school leaver allegedly engaging in prostitution.
The girl was said to have been brought from her village in the eastern part of the country by Ita a few weeks ago on the pretext that she (Ita) would get her a good job.
Our correspondent gathered that one Destiny Bassey, 19, and 18-year-old Bright Effiong, who was said to have been at the inn for three years, were also picked up by the operatives.

During a parade on Tuesday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja, the hotel operators admitted to providing service for the sex workers, except the 15-year-old girl.
The hotel manager, Thomas, said, “It is true that we provide rooms for sex workers where men visit them. We collect N5,000 from them (the sex workers) every week. We don’t give them out to men; they bring their customers themselves.”

The 15-year-old told celebrity news that Ita persuaded her to come to Lagos when she (Ita) saw her playing around the village.
She said, “I finished from primary school two years ago, but I could not continue my study because my parents died. Aunty Monica (Ita) came to the village and asked me to follow her to Abuja. She said she would get me a good job.

“Some days after I got to Lagos, she took me to the hotel to do prostitution. I had yet to get a room when the police came to pick us.”
Bold and unabashed, Bassey, who gave her age as 25, said she slept with five men per day and collected N2,000 from each of her customers.
The Imo State indigene added that joblessness pushed her to the act.

She said, “Nobody forced me into prostitution. I have been hustling at the hotel for some years now. I send part of the money I make to my relatives in the village for the upkeep of my child. I don’t have parents and my husband is dead.
“I sleep with five men every day, so I make as much as N10,000. I pay the hotel N5,000 every week. I wanted to save enough money for my education.”

Effiong, an indigene of Calabar, Cross River State, also said she went to bed with five men daily, adding that some of her customers paid N1,000.
“I came to the hotel last year and paid N3,000 per week for a room. I did only one round with each customer,” she added.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the command swung into action following a tip-off that a syndicate was running a prostitution ring.

“A team of FSARS operatives stormed Collabor Hotel and arrested a 15-year-old girl. She confessed that she was brought to the hotel some weeks ago by one Monica Ita. The coordinators of the prostitution ring, Emmanuel Thomas and John Okon, were also arrested. The case will be charged to court at the completion of investigation,” the CP added.

Two cultists arrested for cutting off corpers’ hand

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspected cultists who chopped off the hand of a corps member, Luntis Julius, using a machete.
The cultists were said to have attacked Julius, who is from Taraba State, during an attack on a corpers’ lodge in the Sagbama area of the state on Sunday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, gave the names of the arrested suspects as Mosan Youdougha, 22; and Godswill Vincent, 21.

Butswat said a third suspect had also been caught but had yet to be handed over to the police, while the police were still on the trail of the fourth member of the gang.

He said, “At about 12pm on Monday, the police, with the help of youths of Angalabiri community, arrested two persons involved in the attack and robbery of some persons at the corpers’ lodge in the area.

“The third person has not yet been turned in by the residents. Efforts are on to arrest the fourth suspect.”
The police said the cultists, during the Sunday mayhem which happened at about 2.30am, dispossessed the corps members of their belongings including a laptop and two mobile phones.

A corps member, who pleaded anonymity, had lamented the security problem in most of the corpers’ lodges in the state, saying the security promised corps members was non-existent.
“Most of the corpers’ lodges are at the mercy of hoodlums and thieves. Female corps members are harassed on a daily basis,” the corps member had said.

Also, during a recent stakeholders’ workshop organised by the National Youths Service Corps, the Coordinator of the NYSC in Bayelsa State, Mrs. Loto Bolade, had pleaded with employers to put facilities in place to address the issue of security and welfare of corps members.

Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Government has expressed concern that in spite of its efforts, moral decadence, drug abuse, cult activities and other social vices were on the rise among youngsters.
The Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, made the observation when the Senior Pastor of Refined Peoples’ Church, Pastor Daddy Ken, paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Information House, Ovom, Yenagoa.

The commissioner said the situation had reached a worrisome level with primary school pupils being initiated into cult groups.

Thank God, i am not a woman!

Yes, I thank God, I am not a woman. What a relief! I celebrate this because I cannot imagine how I would have coped with the mistreatment, molestation's, and discrimination's from the male folks who think they own the world.  Globally, women’s rights are not guaranteed and well-respected. In Nigeria, nay Africa, the fate of women is worse off. It is said that poverty bears the face of a woman. Legally, culturally, socially, educationally, economically and politically, Nigerian women are discriminated against.  This is heart-wrenching!

Culturally, in many Nigerian societies, women are not perceived as being equal to men. They are not allowed to be community leaders neither are their views considered when decisions are to be made about their families and communities. A section of the Nigerian society believes that women are acquired as chattels and do not have a say in how families are run. They are denied inheritance rights and are mistreated including being divorced on account of not being able to give birth to a male child even when science has proved beyond reasonable doubt that a woman can only give birth to a male child when the husband donates Y chromosome to fertilize the X of the woman.

Education of a girl child is not prioritized in many Nigerian societies. The boy child owes that premium. Rather than being sent to school, they are married off at a tender age to go and procreate. When they become baby mothers, they face the challenge of being infected with Vesico Vagina Fistula. Many of the baby mothers infected with the VVF stink because of the frequent discharges. Unfortunately, those families who dare to enroll their girl children in school are now being discouraged with the abduction of over 200 Chibok girls in Borno State in April 2014 and the recent abduction of another 110 girls in Dapchi, Yobe State in February 2018. Even in the cosmopolitan Lagos State, schoolgirls have been abducted.

It does not come to me as surprise therefore that research has shown that women account for more than half the number of people living with HIV worldwide and that young women (10-24 years old) are twice as likely to acquire HIV as young men the same age. This is because of the high prevalence of rape and sexual molestation's against girls and women.  There are also far more many women earning living as sex workers. In 2016, news broke about the sex-for-food phenomenon in some Internally Displaced Persons’ camps in the North-East Nigeria. In conflict situations, be it ethnology-religious or political, women and children bear greater brunt of such crises. They are raped, maimed, and murdered while the traumatized survivors race to the IDP camps to live in deplorable conditions with no adequate food, shelter, clothing and medicare. Are you still wondering why I am thanking God that I am not a woman?

Economically, women are dis-empowered. Many of them are not in decision-making organs of the Ministries, Department and Agencies of government or are they to be found in the upper echelons of blue chip private companies. Men dominate those spaces. Those who want to obtain loans from the banks are asked for collateral which many women don’t have. Women are found more in menial jobs such as hawking, working as house helps, earning a living as site laborers and street sweepers. Some men who are financially buoyant sometimes bar their wives from working. To them, they are willing and ready to provide for all the family needs. What these men do not know or chose to ignore is that there is something called “occupational therapy”. Earning a living has its own therapeutic effect on a person.

In search of greener pastures, women are trafficked abroad to be used as sex slaves or house helps. They are the prime target of stalking ritualists who use their body parts for ritual money-making. Girls are also now being wired up as suicide bombers by insurgents. Socially, women are discriminated against. They are the butt of jokes of comedians and secular musicians portray them as sex symbols in their music. X-rated songs are composed for them while they are encouraged to dance almost naked in musical videos.
In politics, Nigerian women are worse off! Only a sprinkle of them are found in legislative assemblies at the federal and state levels. In the Eight National Assembly, out of the 109 senators, there are only seven women. For the House of Representatives, out of the 360 seats, women are occupying only 15. With almost a century of electoral democracy experience, Nigeria has yet to produce a single elected female governor while only four of them are currently occupying the seat of deputy governors out of the 36 states. In a federal cabinet of 36 ministers, only five are women. No female President or vice president elected yet in the country.

There are at present 68 political parties with few of them having female chairpersons. In many of these parties, the reserved position for women is that of Women Leader. Women do not fare well in Nigerian politics due to a number of artificial barriers and hurdles placed on their way. For instance, Nigerian politics is highly monetized, fraught with violence and discriminatory against the female gender. Nocturnal meetings are the norm and many married women who delve into Nigeria’s murky waters of politics are labeled as promiscuous and ineluctable. Legally speaking, the law even discriminates against women. Did you know that Section 55(1)(d) of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria provides that an assault by a man on a woman is not an offense if they are married, if native law or custom recognizes such a “correction” as lawful, and if there is no grievous hurt. What kind of archaic law is that?

In order to change the tide in favor of women, many initiatives have been made. Apart from the fact that Nigeria is a signatory to many international human rights charters and instruments, we have participated in many international conferences aimed at addressing discrimination against women. Though Nigeria has signed on to the Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, the country has yet to domesticate it. While it is good that Nigeria now has Violence against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015, it has yet to have the Gender and Equal Opportunities Act. The bill was thrown out by the Senate. While it is true that by 1979 all Nigerian women therefrom acquired voting rights once they are 18 years old and registered to vote; and that we now have federal and state ministries of Women Affairs, a lot still needs to be done to ensure gender parity in Nigeria.
Just last Thursday, March 8, 2018, Nigerian women joined their counterparts the world over to celebrate the International Women’s Day while last Sunday was also celebrated by a section of the country’s Christian community as Mother’s Day. After the celebrations, what next? This is therefore a call to action to enhance the status of women in Nigeria and indeed globally. I like the theme of this year’s IWD which was #PressforProgress. Given the fact that the World Economic Forum’s 2017 Global Gender Gap Report findings revealed that gender parity is over 200 years away, it is indeed time to press for progress.

Nigeria needs affirmative action to redress centuries of discrimination's against women especially in politics and public life. This can be done constitutionally through quota system as is the case in Kenya, Uganda and some other countries or by entrenching it in the constitution of our political parties or both. I may be glad not to be a woman but I have a mother, a wife and a daughter. For their sake and because of millions of Nigerian women suffering from discrimination, I am pressing for progress; for the removal of all forms of barriers against women. A bird cannot fly with one wing neither is it possible to clap with one hand. Gender parity will enhance national development as both sexes get to play equal role.

Man throws daughter into well for alleged witchcraft

A 30-year-old man, Mr. Manu Yakubu, has been arraigned before the Nasarawa State High Court for allegedly dumping his six-year-old daughter, Jennifer, in a well.
Yakubu, who resides in the Gidigidi area of the state was said to have allegedly dumped her daughter in the well over alleged witchcraft.

The prosecuting counsel for the police,James Anata, told the court that Yakubu committed the offence on December 8, 2017.
At the Tuesday hearing in the case, a prosecution witness, Samuel Kuje, told the court that he discovered the victim inside the well in his farm in the early hours of December 8.
The witness said, “I first thought she was a ghost but when I asked who she is, she said she was Jennifer Ayuba from Gidigidi.

“I then ran to Gidigidi immediately to inform the head of the community, Mr. Ashila and four other persons; we all went back to my site and brought out the child from the well; then I called the police from B Division in Lafia to arrest the accused.”
The police said Yakubu had in his statement confessed to the crime, explaining that he dumped his daughter in the well because he believed she was responsible for his ill luck.

Yakubu was said to have written in the statement that her daughter had openly confessed that she was a member of a secret cult and had handed him and his wife over to her fellow cultists to be killed this year.
He claimed that the six-year-old admitted that she was responsible for the death of her uncle, Diour Adamu, and her two siblings who passed on shortly after birth.
Yakubu said he believed her daughter’s confession about being a member of a secret cult “because  sometimes she will disappear into the bush and spend over a week before resurfacing.”

The prosecutor on Tuesday urged the judge to convict Yakubu as charged, arguing that the police had proved their case against the defendant beyond reasonable doubt.Justice Rose Fuji adjourned the case till April 23, 2018.
