Hollywood Kenyan born actress, Lupita Nyong’o has announced via Instagram that she will be publishing a children’s book titled “Sulwe” to be released in January 2019.
Lupita posted a picture of an article about her publishing the book, writing that Sulwe, a character in the book is a dark-skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure.
She wrote: I am pleased to reveal that I have written a children’s book! It’s called “Sulwe”! Sulwe is a dark-skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty. She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning.
This is a story for little ones, but no matter the age I hope it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin. Coming January 2019!!
According to New York Times, Sulwe means “star” in Lupita’s native language Luo. It is a story of a 5-year-old girl growing up in Kenya, who has the darkest skin colour in her family and is looking for a way to lighten her skin. Her search leads her to an adventure, which changes her perception of what beauty is.
Ms Nyong’o has a strong connection with the main character in her book ‘Sulwe’ as she also struggled with her complexion and self-image as a child. She remembers that while growing up, she became more aware of herself in grade school and started to care about the opinions of other people.
