The Federal Road Maintenance Agency in
Imo State says it has commenced the repair of failed sections of federal
roads in the state.
It said on Tuesday that the exercise,
which commenced along Ihiala-Orlu-Umuduru federal highway, would be
extended to all Trunk A roads in the state.
According to the FERMA engineer in
charge of the state, Mr. Emeka Maduagwu, the agency intends to make
maximum use of the dry season to free all blocked drainage channels on
federal roads.
“We also want to clear the thick vegetation that is on the verges of the road to enhance driving and reduce crashes,” he said.
Maduagwu said that the agency had engaged the people of the area to do the job, thus creating employment for them.
He further stated that clearing the
drainage channels had helped the environment against flooding and
protected the service life of the asphalt pavement.
He said, “FERMA has also commenced the
repair work along Afor-Enyiogugu-Sam Mbakwe Airport Road. The stretch
had been in a state of disrepair for several months, inflicting untold
hardship on road users.”
He said that the agency had put in place
a work plan that would enable it to make major interventions on
critically failed federal roads.
The work plan, Maduagwu said, was expected to be executed within the next nine months.
“It is not just about silting and
vegetation control, while we achieve these, we also want to make sure
crime is reduced; unemployed youths are employed to be part of the road
maintenance process. The roads remain a very important national asset,”
he stated.
