Eighteen people were killed on Friday when a truck carrying goods and passengers overturned on a major highway.
“ The death toll is still provisional ,” said Jean Mwanuka , in charge of the administrative district of Bunyakiri in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo , where the accident happened.
The accident happened at Bulambika , on the highway linking Bukavu and Kisangani , in the northeast , he said.
A local hospital said it had admitted 20 injured people , eight of them in a serious condition .
The accident happened because of the poor condition of the road , said Mwanuka .
Deadly road accidents are frequent in DR Congo , where excess speed , overloading and poor vehicle maintenance are also factors .
